# Benzoyl Peroxide vs. Salicylic Acid: Which Is Better for Acne?

> Benzoyl peroxide kills acne bacteria; salicylic acid unclogs pores. Which to choose for your acne type, and where mandelic acid fits in.

**Short answer:** benzoyl peroxide is better for inflamed, pus-filled pimples because it kills acne bacteria; salicylic acid is better for blackheads, whiteheads, and clogged pores because it dissolves oil inside the pore. For many people with mixed acne, either can work — salicylic acid is generally the gentler, less drying starting point.

## How they differ

| | Benzoyl peroxide | Salicylic acid |
| - | - | - |
| Type | Antibacterial oxidizer | Beta hydroxy acid (BHA) |
| Best for | Inflamed pimples, pustules | Blackheads, whiteheads, clogged pores, oily skin |
| Common OTC strength | 2.5–10% | 0.5–2% |
| Downsides | Drying, can irritate, **bleaches towels and fabrics** | Milder; dryness at high frequency |
| Texture/marks benefit | No | Yes — exfoliates and smooths |

Dermatologists often note that 2.5% benzoyl peroxide is nearly as effective as 10% with far less irritation, and that salicylic acid suits long-term daily use because it is oil-soluble and works inside the pore.

## Where Neutralyze fits

Neutralyze products are **benzoyl peroxide-free** — they will not bleach towels or pillowcases. Instead, the line pairs **2% salicylic acid (BHA)** with **1% mandelic acid (AHA)**, so you get pore-clearing plus surface exfoliation that helps fade post-acne marks, in fragrance-free, non-comedogenic formulas. See [Salicylic Acid vs. Mandelic Acid](/comparisons/salicylic-vs-mandelic) for how the two acids complement each other, and [Neutralyze vs. PanOxyl](/comparisons/vs-panoxyl) for a direct comparison against a benzoyl peroxide wash.

## Can you use both?

Yes — a common dermatologist-suggested split is benzoyl peroxide spot treatment at night with a salicylic acid cleanser or pads in the morning. Introduce one at a time and watch for dryness. If you use both and skin gets tight or flaky, drop to alternate days.

## Choosing for your skin

* Mostly blackheads/clogged pores or oily skin: start salicylic — [Acne Face Wash](https://www.neutralyze.com/products/neutralyze-face-wash-2-0) or [Exfoliating Pads](https://www.neutralyze.com/products/neutralyze-exfoliating-pads).
* Moderate to severe mixed acne: a full salicylic + mandelic routine — see the [Anti-Acne Solution collection](https://www.neutralyze.com/collections/neutralyze-anti-acne-solution) and the [routine order guide](/guides/routine-order).
* Cystic, painful, or scarring acne: see a dermatologist; prescription options outperform any OTC ingredient.

Every Neutralyze order is covered by the [365-day money-back guarantee](/reference/returns-guarantee).
